During Saturday’s game against the Georgia Bulldogs, South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer was captured on camera yelling at female players to leave the field as they celebrated the 50th anniversary of Title IX.
Beamer expressed regret on Sunday, claiming that he was unaware of the ceremony’s timing and that his team’s preparations for a fourth-down convert had taken him off guard.
Beamer said on his weekly conference call, “We were so preoccupied deciding what we were going to do. “What was happening in our own offensive huddle worried me. I’m sorry to anyone I’ve offended. It was merely my initial response.

During the television commercial between the first and second quarters, the incident took place. Jyllissa Harris, a soccer player for South Carolina, posted about what had transpired on social media, and it quickly went viral. Beamer said that more effort should be made into celebrating student athletes and that it shouldn’t just be something a school does to “tick a box” based on her reaction at that that moment. Beamer noted that after the TV time-out finished, the committee instructed him to line up his players as soon as possible.
The honored athletes were still in the end zone when the TV break ended though. Beamer yelled at the female athletes and raised his arms at that point, which was captured on tape.
