Following a very very long period Friends and family assist a WWII veteran in celebrating his 103rd birthday this summer. The way we recognize and celebrate birthdays is one good thing that has come out of the past year.
I hope they are the things that never change—surprises, vehicle parades, more private gatherings, and truly appreciating the people we love so dearly.
Art Raderer celebrated his 103rd birthday with friends and family recently, according to the news.
It wasn’t simple for Raderer of Louisville, Kentucky, to live to be 103 years old.
During the 1918 pandemic, he was born in Louisville, and his father passed away when he was just a little child. His three brothers and three sisters were raised by his mother alone.
After completing high school, Raderer was enlisted in the Army in 1944.
In order to prepare for the invasion of Japan, he was sent to the Philippines, but the ship he was on broke down.
Eventually, Raderer reached the Philippines, where he assisted with building, but the war ended before the 1629th Engineer Construction Battalion, of which he was a member, was needed.
He spent some time stationed in Japan before returning to the United States to serve in the Kentucky National Guard.
He was a major when he finally retired, 19 years later.
With friends, family, and even some random people who stopped to wish him well, he is now enjoying his birthday.
“It’s well – it overwhelms me really, I don’t know why people do that but it’s always good to see all of your friends,” he said.
