During its eight-hour flight to the Big Apple, a New Zealand flight was forced to change its itinerary due to a power outage at JFK Airport.
International flights in JFK’s Terminal 1 were grounded on Thursday due to a fire that seriously disrupted power.
Travelers had to find alternative terminals and airports to use, or accept the fact that they would have to leave on a different day.
According to Flight Radar, passengers on one Air New Zealand flight were stranded for 16 hours after their plane was diverted back to Auckland because of the chaos at JFK.
The aircraft would have needed to stay on the ground for several days if it had diverted to another US port, which would have affected numerous other scheduled services and patrons.
Although there hasn’t yet been an official announcement regarding the precise date that Terminal 1 will reopen to its full capacity, JFK Airport did say that Terminal 1 would be closed on Friday.
JFK Terminal 1 will remain closed on February 17 due to electrical problems, the airport announced on Twitter. The Port Authority is continuing to work with the terminal’s operator to quickly resume flight operations. Before arriving at the airport, passengers should check with their carriers about the status of their flights.
31 international airlines, including Air China, Air France, and Korean Air, depart from Terminal 1 along with Air New Zealand.
JFK Airport has been contacted by The Post for more information.
