A Lower Southampton, Pennsylvania, man faces charges of sexual assault against an underage girl who was allegedly gifted to him by her parents.

The former Amish couple were experiencing a financial hardship and went to 52-year-old Lee Kaplan for help, police said, the Bucks County Courier Times reports. They then gave him their 14-year-old daughter.

The girl, now 18, told police that Kaplan is the father of her two children, ages 6 months and 3 years. When police were called to Kaplan’s home because of a complaint made by neighbor Jen Bets about the health and welfare of the children living there, they found 12 girls inside, ranging in age from 6 months to 18 years old.

The two children Kaplan fathered with the girl were present at the property.

“It’s never the wrong time to do the right thing,” Bets told WCAU. “There were signs.”
“(She was) too young to be the wife, too old to be holding his hand,” Bets said of seeing Kaplan walking down the street with the girls.
All of the underage children have been placed in protective custody.

“The conditions in the house were fine,” Lower Southampton Detective Sgt. Shane Hearn said, according to the Courier Times. “They were not undernourished. Kaplan has a farm there and chickens running all over the place. I guess they were living off the land.”
Bets believes the police took too long to respond to her requests to visit Kaplan’s home.

“It took too long,” she said, WCAU reports. “I just want them to get help and get back and be happy. They’re so sad and fearful every time I see them. That’s what made me call.”

Kaplan is charged with statutory sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault on a person younger than 16, corruption of minors, and contact with a minor involving sexual offenses, according to the Bucks County Courier Times. He is being held at Bucks County prison in lieu of 10 percent of $1 million bail.

“I wanted (Kaplan) off the street despite the fact he told me he loved the children,” Lower Southampton district judge John Waltman said.
The girl’s parents, who claim all of the children living in Kaplan’s home are theirs, were arrested on child endangerment charges. Their bail is set at $1 million.

Police have not found any identifying documents for any of the girls, WCAU reports.
“We are still investigating that. Bucks County is investigating that along with other agencies to help identify their genealogy and who their parents actually are,” Lower Southampton Lt. John Krimmel said.
It is unknown how long the children were living with Kaplan.

As a mother went to pull the covers up over her sleeping daughter, she noticed something strange about the side of her child’s head.

The girl had been out late the night before with her mom’s boyfriend, so the mother looked at her man in horror, demanding to know what happened in her absence. Unfortunately, she would learn that it was far worse than she thought.

According to The Indy Star, Noel Maxwell allowed her boyfriend, Andrew J. Milburn, to take her 3-year-old daughter, who is not his biological daughter, to a party that he said was at his parent’s house in the next town over.

Noel stayed behind to get some sleep, and she was reportedly still asleep when Andrew and her little girl returned home that night.

When the mother woke the next morning and found that her daughter was still fast asleep, she decided to go check on her. When she brushed the girl’s delicate blonde locks off of her sweet face, she felt a massive swelling on the side of her head that definitely was not there the night before. It was so large that it was protruding from her skull, visible without having to touch to find it.

Noel confronted Andrew, demanding to know what happened to her daughter’s head, which he excused as a guess that maybe she fell from a chair while at his parent’s house. The mother rushed the little girl to the hospital, where she soon found out the horrific truth that this was no accident — Andrew had scalped her child.

Doctors at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Frankfort, Indiana, near the family’s home, said that the extensive swelling was caused by extremely rough pulling on the child’s hair, forcibly removing the child’s scalp from her skull. This trauma results in severe bruising, internal bleeding, and swelling.

Police say Noel Maxwell, the child’s mother and suspect’s girlfriend, discovered swelling on the side of the child’s head on Feb. 23 and took the 3-year-old girl to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Frankfort. The child was later transported to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, according to Fox59.

Child Protective Services notified the Howard County Sheriff’s Department of the incident. The suspect, Andrew J. Milburn, was present at the hospital.

According to police, Maxwell said she was asleep the night of Feb. 23 when Milburn and the girl returned from visiting Milburn’s parents in Russiaville. When Maxwell went to check on the child after waking up, she found extensive swelling on the side of the girl’s head. Milburn told his girlfriend the girl must have fallen from a chair at his parents’ home.

For unspecified reasons, Andrew became abusive to the girl at his parent’s party. Police determined, through their investigation, that this included the girl being struck multiple times on her head before being dragged around or pulled by her hair. The abusive boyfriend was arrested on Tuesday and charged with battery resulting in serious bodily injury to a person less than 14 years of age. He is being held on a $25,000 bond.

After working out of town for a month, a soldier returns home hoping he’ll have a good time with his family. He believed life would be more joyful having her by his side, unaware that fate had a shocking surprise in store for him. Since the couple had dated for almost a decade before their marriage, Daniel saw Megan as the only person who understood him well.

He envisioned her blending in effortlessly with his wife and being his best friend for life. Everything went well during the first two years of their marriage, as expected. As Daniel neared the tent, he realized that his mother had been sitting there for a long time because he saw a bag of trash outside the tent and her clothes piled up in a corner. Daniel froze in horror. He didn’t want to answer his son’s questions. “Mom, what are you doing here?” Daniel asked her again as he got down on his knees.

“Nothing, honey. I just-” Elizabeth lowered her gaze. “Mom, look at me. I want to know what happened.” He cupped his mother’s wrinkled face in his palms, and his heart sank looking at how much frailer she’d gone.

Her smile was weak, her lips were chapped, and there was only a thin line of tears in her eyes. “Everything’s fine, Daniel,” Elizabeth lied. “Mom, please tell me why you’re living outside. Where’s Megan?” Daniel’s eyes darted around before fixating on his mother’s again.

“She kicked me out.” The older woman burst into tears while telling her son what had happened. “She always tells me to live in a tent when you’re not home. I never told you about it because I didn’t want to bother you, sweetheart.” Daniel couldn’t believe his ears.

“Megan kicks you out when I’m not around? Seriously?” Refusing to listen to his mother’s pleas to stop him from confronting Megan, Daniel stormed inside the house, shouting angrily. “Megan, how dare you make my mother sleep outside? Are you out of your mind?

When he spotted a snake inside the car, a driver in England who was on his way to deliver a car was forced to take an unanticipated detour.

The driver was transporting a car from a dealership in Tipton, West Midlands, to a customer in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, when he noticed a 5-foot snake slithering out of the dashboard, according to the Linjoy Wildlife Sanctuary and Rescue.

Rescuers from Linjoy arrived on the scene quickly but found that the snake had buried itself within the vehicle.

The driver was persuaded to continue the journey for another fifteen minutes to the home of Lindsay Newell, the owner of Linjoy, where she and a friend named Mark were able to access the elusive reptile by removing the carpet, plastic trims, and passenger seat.

The snake was identified as a harmless corn snake.
