When it comes to branding, Microsoft’s OneNote app has a particularly perplexing history. The company currently offers two OneNote apps with nearly identical names: “OneNote for Windows” (also known as “OneNote”) and “OneNote for Windows 10.”
Although Microsoft claims to be merging these two apps into a single solution, no progress has been made. OneNote for Windows will become the go-to solution for new features under the unification, whereas OneNote for Windows 10 will only be in support mode until October 2025 and will not receive new functionalities. OneNote for Windows is now available in the Microsoft Store, according to the Redmond tech titan.
The “recommended” new OneNote for Windows app can be found in the Microsoft Store here, as can the old OneNote for Windows 10 app. You’ll notice that both apps have the same “OneNote” name and very similar icons, making it easy to determine which one you need.
To determine which OneNote app you are using, open the app and navigate to the File menu. You’re using the recommended OneNote for Windows app if you have it, but if you don’t, you’re using OneNote for Windows 10. If you’re using an older version of the app, the title bar will also display the name of the latter.
