This morning, Facer unveiled a first for the sector: real-time 3D watch faces for Wear OS smartwatches.
We’re talking about real-time, interactive 3D animations with large polygon counts, high-res textures, and “lifelike” rendering, as well as dynamic lighting effects, particle effects, and procedurally produced visual effects. On supported watches (Galaxy Watch 4 and 5 series), you’ll even get amazing animations at 60 frames per second.
Concerning battery life, Facer asserts in its FAQ that the 3D faces have undergone thorough testing and use no more battery than conventional 2D faces. This seems fairly amazing. Although variation is now somewhat restricted due to the feature’s recent launch, Facer’s community of partner designers will soon release hundreds of new looks.
Furthermore, keep in mind that while not all smartwatches will support these faces, most of the most well-liked Wear OS models will. The Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 5, Pixel Watch, Fossil Gen 6, and all Wear OS devices powered by the Snapdragon 4100+ chipset are all compatible with the 3D faces.
