Officials reported that a US Coast Guard cutter collided with a fishing boat off the coast of Puerto Rico on Monday, leaving one guy dead and his brother injured.
Around 2:20 p.m., the Desakata, a 23-foot fishing boat, and the 154-foot US Coast Guard cutter Winslow Griesser collided four nautical miles north of Dorado, Puerto Rico. According to the Coast Guard, Monday afternoon.
The Coast Guard recognized the two brothers on board the Desakata as Carlos and Samuel Rosario Beltrán.
The crew of the Winslow Griesser, a Sentinel-class swift deployment cutter located in San Juan, saved the two fishermen after the incident.
According to the Coast Guard, Samuel suffered injuries but survived the collision while Carlos died.To receive medical attention, Samuel was brought to the Centro Medico Hospital in San Juan. The Coast Guard announced that Carlos’ remains would be brought to the Forensic Science Institute in San Juan.
Capt. José E. Dáz, head of the Coast Guard’s San Juan Sector, said, “We sincerely mourn the loss of Carlos Rosario following the collision between a Coast Guard cutter and the Desakata fishing vessel this afternoon.”
We express our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and loved ones and wish that they will find courage at this trying time, said Daz.
Uncertainty surrounds the crash’s cause. A thorough investigation, according to Dáz, is being conducted “to identify the causative factors” and “so that we can prevent these types of incidents from occurring in the future.”The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the cause of the collision.
